On this 13th day of July 2010, the very same date of tonight’s scheduled National League Baseball’s All-star Game, George Michael Steinbrenner III passed away at the age of 80 years old from a massive heart attack.
So who was this individual? If you haven’t heard of his name by now, then you’ve probably been remiss about this controversial sports owner, as well as this savvy business man.
Mr. Steinbrenner…Most likely, you either hate him or you absolutely love him. Either way this outspoken New York legend and titan of the sports world provided some very unusual methods for putting championship teams together, namely the New York Yankees.
As principal owner of the New York Yankees for decades, the team amassed 11 American League pennants and 7 World Championships. Winning meant everything to this individual, no matter the costs.
Personally, I’m left with my stomach in my throat. While I adamantly disagreed with his approaches to winning, as he fired 15 different managers during his tenure, on the other hand, I admired his fervor to attain excellence regardless of the opposition.
In closing, anyone associated with this New York legend, especially family and close friends, Cherise and I extend our deepest condolences.
