Monk says “Simplification is here to stay…”

Cherise Selley July 18th, 2010

Over the years I’ve slowly given into some of my husband’s ways, and in particular, when it comes to differentiating between needs and wants. Gordon truly has a knack for organization. Just take a look into our closet. His clothes are hung on cherry wood hangers and evenly spaced, from color-coded shirts to style of pant wear. And as for my side, well, let’s just say I’m still making some strides.

Whenever I watch any episode of Monk, the similarities between Monk and Gordon are very closely related. In fact, I usually burst out into laughter, just thinking about some of their matching behavioral tendencies – which brings me to the point of this blog.

Simplification is here and will probably remain for a while. As a Colorado Springs Realtor, I witness this trend on behalf of the Buyer, as well as the Seller. It seems like more and more buyers are looking for smaller homes to purchase. And with respect to the Seller, home staging, de-cluttering and organizing are effective methods for getting his or her home sold.

Organizing your home doesn’t mean to throw as much away as you possibly can. It means to make a conscious decision to differentiate between needs and wants – something that’s hard for me since everything has its special meaning. Yet, I’ve converted some of my thinking for the sanity of our lives.

Since I’m very eco-conscious, to differentiate between needs and wants is a little easier when I think in terms of donating and recycling – because donating and recycling helps to soften the blow whenever I decide to throw something away. It helps me to validate what I’m doing when I think about humanity and environmental responsibility. In fact, I’ve become much more organized since implementing this mindset into how I look at simplification.

If you’re looking to donate clothing, toys, furniture and houseware, then I recommend that you deliver such items to a local charity, such as Goodwill. And if recycling is your cup of tea, then consider clicking onto www.epa.gov about electronics and www.usa.gov regarding appliances.
