Once upon a time…there was no question what would happen to someone if they had received bad publicity. Yet today, things are very different for several who have leap-frogged from their transgressions to advance their careers.
Take Eliot Spitzer for example. He served as Governor of New York until he was forced to resign his post in the spring of 2008 due to his direct involvement in a high-priced prostitution ring. Instead of being banned from further public exposure and rewarded financially afterwards, he is now part of the Parker Spitzer show on CNN.
We know of many other stories with similar endings. In days past, and not too long ago, these types of promotions were unheard of against the importance of upright integrity. But today, the construct of forgiveness has been twisted to the point that human grace now rewards the perpetrator more than the morally upright.
Listen…I’ll step down from my own pedestal to share some thoughts about behaviors and its relationship with publicity.
Simply as far as I’m concerned, as this pertains to being a Colorado Springs CO Realtor, the only good publicity is good publicity.
I acknowledge that none of us is sin-free while we live on earth. And I certainly do not pick up the first stone to chuck it while staying in a glass house.
Yet, I think we should all be careful about what we put out on our social media – I included. The broader, social media audience buffers our mistakes and rewards outrageous conduct – something that pulls us from the center of goodness.
Nonetheless, think about what I read from The 2009 Realtor® Technology Report regarding Top Lead-Generation Techniques. In this report, repeat business and referrals remain as the top sources for business, accounting for 96% and 95%, respectively.
From my point of view, avoid the outlandish and that part of your ethics that tip toes the line in your branding. Not everyone will be rewarded as seen by others who are criminally disgraced on television or in the sports arena.
The core of referrals and repeat business responds to good publicity and to your topnotch situational ethics and impeccable service.
