It’s too easy to dwell on the negative ramifications from short sales and foreclosures. But the truth is, as pointed out by Kouzes and Posner in their bestseller book entitled, The Leadership Challenge, “Success does not breed success. It breeds failure. It is failure which breeds success.”
And from our worst mistakes, there is still an opportunity to start over, to begin anew, to become restored, and to fully live life again. From the people I have spoken with who have undergone tremendous painful adversity, such as my husband (Chronic pain and 4 neck surgeries), in the long run, suffering has been the instrument to better living, as well as a means to actually help others to reach higher levels of aspiration.
Don’t let the sting of foreclosure keep you hostage from living. Instead, you’ve acquired a unique perspective in which to grow in your spiritual faith, to reconstruct your life more prudently, and to glean the best from what life has to offer.
As stated in The Leadership Challenge, “If that advice seems patently absurd, think about the careers of a few famous professional sports winners (paraphrased):
- Babe Ruth struck out 1,330 times. In between his strikeouts, he hit 714 home runs.
- Martina Navratilova lost 21 of her first 24 matches against arch-rival Chris Evert. She resolved to hit more freely on the big points and beat Evert 39 out of their next 57 matches. No woman tennis pro has ever won as many matches or as many tournaments, including a record 9 Wimbledon singles titles, as Navratilova.
From the places of apparent failure, Ruth and Navratilova carved their niches successfully into the history books. How about you? You can recover and do the same with your life…
