The Rock

The Rock

Spending time alone hiking during this quarantine has been one of the most beautiful times I have experienced in the presence of God in a long time. Deep within the trail, the white rocks give way to a darker boulder. This rock beckons me to sit awhile and take in the view. Exhale. I feel safe on this rock, even though it is suspended high above … closer to birds of flight than to the ground. The Lord is our rock, and this rock becomes a visual representation. Standing on a place that cannot be moved, I rest on the boulder beneath my feet that provides unshakable safety, a refuge that does not end. It brings a line of sight beyond the trees to the mountains, where color bursts off of the mountain tops like angels singing. Rays of sunlight join in the dance of the sky as the wind softly caresses me like a blanket. Thank you, Lord, that I can experience this right now. It never occurs to me at this moment that a pandemic is trying to kill. Beauty brings me to You, & this rock is a foretaste of being safely steadied in You.
